Another exciting week for DVD releases is upon us, as three of the four films listed were strong contenders at the Oscars.
With the releases of The Pursuit of Happyness, Happy Feet, Candy, and Children of Men, there will be plenty of family entertainment and adult drama new in stores this week. The Pursuit of Happyness is an Oscar nominated film that features Will Smith, playing Chris Gardner, who is a stressed-out salesman in the early 80’s. This failing salesman, along with his double-shift working wife, find themselves in hard times as they attempt to provide for their son, Christopher (Jaden Smith (Will’s son)). With everything hanging on the line, Chris attempts a new internship with a stock brokerage firm. The choice leaves him wifeless, and eventually homeless, as he individually attempts to provide for his son. The heartwarming story follows a man who is beyond motivated, as he aspires to reach the top of the business world for himself and his son. The Pursuit of Happyness comes out on DVD March 27th.
The animated Happy Feet won best animated feature film of the year at the Oscars. With its clever, family-oriented writing and its star-studded cast, it is no wonder why this animated tale won. The flick details the birth of Mumble (Elijah Wood), an Emperor penguin whose circumstances set him and his true friends on a quest to save their colony of starving penguins. Besides Elijah Wood, the movie features acting greats such as Nicole Kidman, Robin Williams and Hugh Jackman. There is no doubt this is a great family DVD for anyone looking for a few PG laughs. Happy Feet is available on DVD March 27th.
Another new release this Tuesday, Candy is a depressing drama that details the lives of two addicts as they ultimately throw their lives away. Starring Heath Ledger, Abbey Cornish and Geoffrey Rush, the movie is far from inspiring because of its dark content. But that isn’t to say that the film isn’t moving. The story tracks the two lovers/addicts as they’re downward spiral leads them to having dysfunctional priorities, ultimately not caring about what they used to find important.
Our last review goes to Children of Men, which is a futuristic thriller flick that follows Theo Faron (Clive Owen) as he attempts to save the dying human race with the protection of an innocent woman. In 2027, the stage is set for humanity to become extinct, as no woman on the planet can give birth for reasons unbeknownst to science. With tensions flaring world-wide and war on the brink of becoming commonplace, Faron and Julian Taylor (Julianne Moore) must escort this single pregnant woman to safety in order for her secret to be uncovered and humanity saved. Michael Caine and Chiwetel Ejiofor also star in this sci-fi adventure, which was nominated for three Oscars. Children of Men will be available on DVD March 27th.
